The Ombuds Office and the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission (PDRC) welcomed the decree issued by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa pardoning 545 inmates, on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha.
Ghada Hameed Habib, the Ombudswoman and Chairperson of the PDRC, said the decree aligns with a strategy to promote the status of human rights. She said that the royal pardon culminated the efforts of bodies concerned with enhancing the conditions of inmates, especially the Ministry of Interior which implemented initiatives like expanding alternative sentencing and the open prisons programme.
She added that the ministry's role complements the efforts of other judiciary and independent human rights institutions.
Habib expressed her confidence in realising the positive outcomes of this decree, especially in upholding human rights values in Bahrain. The Ombudswoman added that such initiatives consolidate Bahrain’s status regionally as a leading model in advocating tolerance and social harmony and advancing human development.
