8- Prisoner or detainee transportation
Prisoners or detainees are transported in appropriate and safe circumstances and are
treated with respect. Individual needs are met during this process and the prisoners or
detainees are informed with ample time about their destination
Indicators
• Prisoners or detainees are transported in safe, clean and comfortable vehicles
equipped with emergency supplies. Appropriate vehicles are used to transport
prisoners or detainees with special needs, pregnant women or women who accompany
children.
• Prisoners or detainees are transported to and from court or the prosecutor office as
soon as possible to reduce the waiting time and the duration of the stay in the court or
the prosecution office.
• The facility is ready to receive prisoners or detainees promptly to avoid waiting in the
vehicle for a long time.
• The necessary official documents, private possessions and money are transported with
the prisoners or detainees.
• Handcuffing should be justified on the basis of risk assessment, and not arbitrarily.
• Prisoners or detainees should be informed in court or in the prosecution officeabout the
prison or detention facility where they will be transferred and in the form and language
they understand.
• Prisoners or detainees have the right to make phone calls to their lawyers and their
families when they are transported.
