Ombudsman General-Secretariat under the spotlight in Geneva

Geneva, 12/06/2014 (BNA)Ombudsman Secretary-General Nawaf Mohammed Al-Maawda attended a series of meetings on the sidelines of the 26th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. The Ombudsman General Secretariat today hosted a function to outline its work procedures and prerogatives as well as the different phases of its establishment. The event was attended by ambassadors, delegates representing UNHRC member countries as well as officials representing international human rights organisations, journalists and public figures. The attendees was briefed about the activities of the Ombudsman Secretary-General since its establishment in July 2013 following the recommendations of Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI). The Ombudsman General Secretariat members led by Mr. Al-Maawda held a series of meetings with the UN Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) members, ambassadors of countries attended the UNHRC session, international watchdogs and briefed them on the first report which was released recently. Mr. Al-Maawada stressed the importance of the events and meetings which are part of the strategy undertaken by the Ombudsman General-Secretariat to reach out to international watchdogs, NGOs, diplomats and leading figures. In a statement today, he extended thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its efforts to ensure the success of the events in Geneva. He also paid tribute to Bahrain Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva Dr. Abdulkarim Bucheeri, international watchdogs and Bahrain mission employees.
