Ombudsman participates in regional conference

A delegation from the General Secretariat of the Ombudsman led by Abdel Rahman Ali Fares, the Director of the Grievances Affairs Directorate, participated in a regional conference on sharing best practices and experiences in preventing torture in police custody in the Middle East and North Africa, held by the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) of Morocco in collaboration with the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT).

Fares said the conference was an opportunity to showcase Bahrain’s efforts to combat torture, particularly through independent national institutions like the General Secretariat of Ombudsman and the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission (PDRC).

Bahrain adopted a comprehensive strategy that integrates these institutions with other parties, aiming to develop a pioneering Bahraini model that enhances human rights protection in law enforcement agencies, correctional centers, and social care homes, he said.

The General Secretariat of the Ombudsman's participation in the conference strengthened its regional and international presence, enhancing its position alongside specialised institutions crucial in promoting human rights values in the criminal justice system, he added.
