Ombudsman Visits Amnesty International

London-Jan16 /2013 (BNA) Interior Ministry Ombudsman Secretary-General Nawaf Mohammed Al-Maawda today met London-based Amnesty International deputy-director for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) deputy-director Hassiba Haj Sahraoui and other officials.

Mr. Al-Maawda outlined the duties and prerogatives of the Ombudsman Secretary-General Office.

He also pointed out the ongoing preparations to open the Ombudsman Secretary-General Office officially, to be the first of its kind on the Arabian Gulf region.

The establishment of the Ombudsman Secretary-General Office reflects Bahrain's commitment to enforce the values of justice, respect of human rights as well as keenness on benefiting from deeply-rooted international experiences, in line with the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) recommendations.

The session discussed ways of promoting cooperation to promote human rights, and address citizens and residents' complaints professionally.

Ombudsman Secretary-General Nawaf Mohammed Al-Maawda expressed the hope that the visit to Amnesty Internationals and other watchdogs would contribute to building bridges of constructive cooperation and promoting direct contacts in total transparency.
